Choose The Right Wheel Nuts For Your Aftermarket Wheels

Exoracing open-ended wheel nuts are designed for aftermarket wheels that use a 60-degree conical seat. Their open-ended design allows longer or extended wheel studs to pass through the nut, making them suitable for road, track and modified cars using compatible wheels and studs.

Correct fitment depends on both the wheel seat and the wheel stud thread. Do not choose by vehicle brand alone. Before ordering, confirm that your wheels use a 60-degree conical seat and that your studs are either M12x1.5 or M12x1.25.

Wheel fitment Aftermarket wheels with a 60-degree conical, tapered or acorn seat
Thread options Choose M12x1.5 or M12x1.25 to match your existing wheel studs
Material options Forged chrome vanadium steel for greater durability or 6061 aluminium for lower weight
Purchase includes 20 wheel nuts. The forged steel option also includes the matching wheel nut key

Important: these wheel nuts will not fit ball-seat, radius-seat, flat-seat or washer-seat wheels. You must also check that the wheel nut recess is wide enough for the selected nut.

Which Wheel Nut Option Should I Choose?

Forged steel Choose forged steel when durability, regular wheel removal and long-term use are the main priorities. A set of 20 weighs approximately 1047g and includes the matching wheel nut key.
6061 aluminium Choose aluminium when lower weight and appearance are the main priorities. A set of 20 weighs approximately 501g. Aluminium wheel nuts must be installed and removed carefully using hand tools.
M12x1.5 Commonly used on many Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Mazda models. This is only a general guide, so confirm the thread on your vehicle before ordering.
M12x1.25 Commonly used on many Nissan and Subaru models. This is only a general guide, so confirm the thread on your vehicle before ordering.

Still unsure? Read our guide to choosing the correct wheel nuts before placing your order.

Why Buy Exoracing Open-Ended Wheel Nuts?

Aftermarket wheels do not always use the same seat design as the original wheels fitted to the vehicle. Using the wrong seat shape can prevent the nut from locating correctly against the wheel, even when the thread appears to fit.

These Exoracing wheel nuts use a 60-degree conical seat commonly found on aftermarket alloy wheels. The open-ended design also allows them to be used with compatible extended wheel studs without the end of the stud bottoming out inside a closed nut.

The forged steel and aluminium versions give you a clear choice between durability and lower weight, while the six colour options allow the wheel hardware to suit the rest of the car. They are best fitted when changing to aftermarket wheels, installing spacers or upgrading to extended wheel studs.

Exoracing Wheel Nut Installation Guide

Installation difficulty: moderate DIY. Safe lifting equipment and a correctly set torque wrench are required.

  1. Park the vehicle on firm, level ground. Apply the handbrake and loosen the existing wheel nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  2. Lift the vehicle using its approved jacking points and support it securely with axle stands.
  3. Confirm that the new wheel nut matches the stud thread by turning it onto the stud by hand. It should turn freely without being forced.
  4. Fit the wheel nuts by hand and tighten them gradually in a cross or star pattern.
  5. Lower the vehicle and tighten every nut with a torque wrench to the correct specification for the vehicle, studs and wheels.
  6. Recheck the wheel nut torque after the first drive.

Do not use an impact gun to install or remove the aluminium wheel nuts. Hand tools are also recommended for the forged steel version to help protect the finish. Professional installation is recommended if you are not confident working safely with wheels or lifting the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these wheel nuts fit my original factory wheels?

Only when the factory wheel uses a compatible 60-degree conical seat. Many original wheels use a ball, radius, flat or washer-style seat instead. Check the wheel seat before ordering rather than relying only on the vehicle make and model.

How do I know whether I need M12x1.5 or M12x1.25?

Check your workshop manual, confirm the specification of the existing wheel stud or measure the thread with a thread gauge. Vehicle-brand guidance is useful as a starting point but is not proof of fitment.

Should I choose forged steel or aluminium?

Choose forged steel when durability and regular wheel removal are the priorities. Choose aluminium when lower weight and appearance are more important, and you are prepared to install and remove the nuts carefully using hand tools.

Can these be used with extended wheel studs?

Yes. The open-ended design allows compatible extended studs to pass through the nut. You can also browse our extended wheel stud range if you are upgrading your wheel hardware.

Will a set of 20 work on a four-stud car?

Yes. A four-stud vehicle uses 16 wheel nuts, leaving four spares. A five-stud vehicle uses the complete set of 20.

Do I need to check the width of the wheel nut?

Yes. The forged steel nuts are 22mm wide, and the aluminium nuts are 24.5mm wide. Check that the nut and required socket or key will fit inside the wheel's nut recess before ordering.

Can I use an impact gun?

Do not use an impact gun on the aluminium wheel nuts because it can damage the thread or nut. Hand tools are also recommended for the forged steel version to reduce damage to the coating.
